چکیده

Objective: To help care providers understand the current status of cervical cancer in low-resource countries. Options: The most effective and practical options for cervical screening and treatment in low-resource countries are evaluated. Outcomes: Improvement in rates of prevention and early detection of cervical cancer in low-resource countries. Evidence: PubMed or Medline, CINAHL, and The Cochrane Library were searched for studies published in English between January 2006 and December 2009. Results were restricted to systematic reviews, randomized control trials/controlled clinical trials, and observational studies. Grey (unpublished) literature was identified through searching the websites of health technology assessment and health technology assessment-related agencies, clinical No. 255, March 2011 This document reflects emerging clinical and scientific advances on the date issued and is subject to change. Evidence-based, alternative cervical cancer screening approaches in low-resource settings.

Cervical cancer kills approximately 270,000 women worldwide each year, with nearly 85% of those deaths occurring in resource-poor settings.1 Use of the Pap smear for routine screening of women has resulted in a dramatic decline in cervical cancer deaths over the past four decades in wealthier countries. A key reason for continuing high mortality in the developing world is the shortage of effici...

Cervical Cancer Screening in Resource-Constrained Countries: Current Status and Future Directions

Cervical cancer continues to be a major public health problem affecting large numbers of women in many developing countries. Limitations of various screening modalities and the lack of ready availability of a cost-effective point-of-care screening tool have hindered the efficient implementation of population-based screening programs in these settings. It has not proved possible for many countri...

Evidence-based screening, early diagnosis and treatment strategy of cervical cancer for national policy in low- resource countries: example of India.

Cervical cancer remains the most frequent cancer in women from the developing world. More than 88% of deaths occur in low-income countries, and it is predicted to climb to 91.5% by 2030. Although Pap-based screening programmes have shown to be effective in reducing the disease burden in high-resource countries, implementation and sustention of cytology-based programmes is quite challenging in l...

Preventing cervical cancer globally.

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer and cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. More than 85% of cases and deaths occur in the developing world where the availability of effective screening is limited. In this issue of the journal, Pierce and colleagues (beginning on page 1273) describe a novel technique using a high-resolution microendoscope (HRME) to diagnose cervical ...

Training for cervical cancer prevention programs in low-resource settings: focus on visual inspection with acetic acid and cryotherapy.

The modern approach to cervical cancer prevention, characterized by use of cytology and multiple visits for diagnosis and treatment, has frequently proven challenging and unworkable in low-resource settings. Because of this, the Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention (ACCP) has made it a priority to investigate and assess alternative approaches, particularly the use of visual screening methods...
